Can You Identify This Man?

My brother-in-law is taking a Western Civilization class this semester and was given an extra-credit challenge of identifying the statue pictured above. He sent it to all of us to see if we could figure out its identity. But after hours of searching, we’re all at a complete loss! So, I decided to post it here and see if I happen to have any really smart readers who know who this is. Any ideas? Please? :-)

    That image is associated with Charlemagne on the first page of results in a Google Images search.

    Woohoohoo! Yes! (I was hoping you would chime in on this, Eric.) My Dad says to congratulate you for accomplishing in a matter of minutes what a whole crew of us couldn’t accomplish in 20+ hours of searching… :-)

    And now, thanks to you, I get the privilege of being taken out for a treat by my sister and brother-in-law. I’ll eat a bite or two in your honor!

    Oh, shucks. I got here too late to guess! I was going to guess King Alfred the Great so I would have been wrong anyway. Oh, well. :(

    Hey Lydia! There are definitely some similarities between this image and several I came across of Alfred the Great. No more mystery pictures at present…but now I’ll know where to post them if I find myself in a similar situation again. ;-)

    And of course, the “other fine folk” would include you! Thanks for the comment and the birthday call. Hopefully we can touch base soon!
