Your somewhat doctored explanation of how we got our picture taken with Bob Dole reminds me of a man I once knew who claimed that everyone knew him and where he was from; his name was Will Jennings, and he was from Sweetwater, South Carolina. Well, I knew of course that this was a ridiculous claim, so I said, let's go visit the Mayor. We did, and the Mayor warmly greeted us both, saying to Will, "Will Jennings, how ya doing, haven't seen you in a while." OK, the mayor knows Will, but Sweetwater's a small town; let's go visit the Governor. We drive to Columbia and when we're ushered into the Governor's office, the Guv bounds from behind his desk and greets Will just as warmly as the Mayor had, and asks how things are going down in Sweetwater. All right, I’m impressed, but let’s up the ante. We drive to Washington, D.C. and when we’re shown into the Oval Office, once again Will is immediately recognized and the President wants to know what’s new in Sweetwater. Wow! But I’m still not totally convinced, so we fly to Rome. I tell Will I’ll only believe his claim if he shows up on the balcony with the Pope at the midday audience. To my utter amazement, when the Pope appears at Noon, Will is standing right next to him. OK, I guess maybe everyone does know Will and where he’s from. Then I have an idea…I find a young Italian lad in the crowd who can speak English and I ask him, “Who is that up there on the balcony?” He asks, “Do you mean the one with the tall, pointy hat or the other guy, Will Jennings from Sweetwater, South Carolina?”

Yes, it is Bob Dole (live, Lydia - not a cardboard cutout... :-) ).

Apparently there was a group of veterans from Kansas that had traveled to D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial. We walked past him and he said, "Hey, aren't you all the Wickham family from Kansas? Can I get my picture with you?"

Okay, so maybe that's not exactly how it happened...but after we told him we were from Kansas he did suggest that we get a picture together. He was very friendly. Made for a fun memory!

Looks like Bob Dole to me, but the image is a little small. (The right hand makes me at least 99% certain.)
