No Casinos in Sedgwick County - Vote No on August 7
July 11th, 2007 by natalie
Our family has been doing some work with the No Casinos in Sedgwick County effort, including contacting the Derby churches to garner support, organizing a town hall meeting in Derby earlier this week, distributing yard signs, etc. My Dad came up with a clever acrostic: Don’t let casinos make a MESS out of Sedgwick County.
Casinos are…Morally Evil
Casinos are…Economically Stupid
Casinos are…Socially Subversive
Casinos……….Sabotage Security
There are plenty of statistics to substantiate these claims. The No Casinos in Sedgwick County website has a lot of helpful information, as does the site We Believe in Wichita. So why are some people pushing so hard to get people to vote yes? Let’s see…if the owners (or whatever they are calling themselves since somehow they are construing this so that the state of Kansas will really be the one owning and operating the casino…) of the casinos or potential casino locations are the ones pushing for this and the casino owners, according to the bill passed by our state legislature (but not, I’m proud to say, by our Representative Don Myers, who has stood firmly opposed to gambling throughout his time in office), will be receiving 73% of the revenue while the state will receive 22%, who wants to guess why they’re in favor of the measure and why they are willing to pour astronomic amounts of money into their campaign to influence voters to vote yes?
This is an important issue that will affect the future of Wichita and the surrounding community for generations to come. Did you know that statistics show that no area has removed a casino after voting to allow it? It’s not like several years from now, when the casino lords are lining their pockets with money siphoned out of Wichita citizens and businesses, we’ll be able to just vote them out and revert things back to the way they were. This has the potential to permanently devastate Wichita and it will affect all of us who live in the area in some way.
TO DO list for Sedgwick County citizens:
1. Apply for an Advance Voting Ballot. You’ll receive your ballot in the mail after July 15. Vote no and send your vote in as soon as possible so that you don’t forget.
2. Pray! Send me an e-mail if you’d like me to forward you the specific things we are asking people to pray in regard to this vote.
3. Put up a yard sign. Let us know if you would like us to get you one.
4. Help get the word out so that people will be voting based on information that is true and complete.
