Mind Puzzles #6

Volumes I and II of a set of encyclopedias each have â…›-inch covers and 1 inch of pages. The set is arranged in order on a shelf. If a bookworm starts at the first page of Volume I and eats its way through to the last page of Volume II, how many inches does it travel?

I’d say 2 1/4 inches if you don’t count the front cover of the first volume or back cover of the second volume.

    Am I correct? :)

You would have fit in well on New Year’s Eve, Lydia. Every team came up with the same answer as you…but alas, it is incorrect.

Visualize the books in your mind and ask where on the bookshelf page one of book one would be and where the last page of book two would be…get it now?

Wow. That’s a -real- brain teaser!

That’s for sure, Hannah! Which is probably why no one guessed correctly the first time. No one except your Mom, that is… :-)
